Noted lyricist and Oscar Winner Gulzar today said there was an urgent need to redefine Indian cinema rather than just ‘ children’s films ‘.
He said there the film industry has to re-orient itself reflect the aspirations and needs of the children of the contemporary period rather than ‘ sermonizing or preaching about value systems that have been fast eroding in the present society .
Gulzar was speaking at the Open Forum on the theme of ‘Is it time to re-define Children’s cinema? ‘ got up at the 16th International Children’s Film Festival at Hyderabad .
He said the Indian film industry has still not realized the huge potential of the children’s films market. “One could say that most of the films made in Bollywood are just childish even when they were made for Adults , due to their lack of social perspective and insensitive to aspirations of children “.
He said it was difficult to make children films as ‘children films need original ideas and can not be produced on borrowed thoughts and themes”.
Eminent director of award winning children’s films Vishal Bharadwaj lamented that the Indian children films were insensitive to childrens feelings and sentiments.

“Good children’s films, particularly the animation films had large adult following. The films of Walt Disney, which had both emotions and humor, are an example “, he said.
Virendra Saini , director of the film ‘ kabhi pass kabhi fail ‘ said children’s film makers should take note of the demands of child audience . “Children look up for some action, comedy and entertainment in every film and unless the films provide it they will not patronize it “.
Saini said child psychology also paid a great role in making films to the taste of children.
“Like children will not eat food unless it appealed to them, they will also not see the unpalatable films “, he said.
The German film maker and a member of the jury international jury of the 16th ICFF Ms. Uta Hartmann said the Indian children’s films should also respond to the aspirations of people from lower income strata . “Children’s Films should be seamless and also cross the income and social barriers “, she said.
